| Whenever there is a call for the lifeboat
service, be it an emergency distress call or an anticipated alert,
the procedure for launching the lifeboat is the same.
Pagers are activated and the
details relayed. Many rescues are achieved
by a joint operation with other lifeboat crews, together with the
coast guard, and often with a helicopter in support.
A National Paging Service is
often used as a primary means of callout for life boat crew. This
is primarily a tone paging system but some members
who are able to multitask (paramedics, doctors and shore crew) are
equipped with tone and message pagers.
Pager Alert!
Pagers at each lifeboat station have their own
number. This means that each crew member can be paged
individually i.e. coxswain, mechanic or crew member.
